In the United States, the DEA classifies controlled substances in 5 categories depending on the medicinal use and risk of developing dependency. Doctor’s may prescribe drugs classified as Schedule II, III, IV, or V but cannot write prescriptions for drugs classified as Schedule I because these drugs have no agreed upon medical use. Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule I drug.
