Workshop Model Lesson Plan

Diploma Plus National March 2009
www.diplomaplus.net Page 1 of 3

The Diploma Plus® Workshop Model Lesson Plan organizes the key information in a lesson and helps
the teacher plan the instruction and assessment for the class period using the Workshop Model.

Purpose:
The Workshop Model Lesson Plan is step 5 in the DP Curriculum Design process. The Workshop Model
Lesson Plan expands the work in the Unit Plan Lesson Overview by developing the full agenda and
identifying other related information for a lesson.

Directions:
After completing the Unit Plan Lesson Overview for the unit, the teacher lists the objective, standards,
competencies, and assessments that had been identified for the lesson. Next, the teacher uses the
brief description of the work period activity from the Unit Plan Lesson Overview to develop the full
Workshop Model agenda for the class, including the components of the mini-lesson, the practice, and
the wrap-up.

Lesson Overview
Objective: The lesson objective identifying the skill, content knowledge or strategy students will be able
(SWBAT) to perform by the end of the lesson.

Prioritized Standards:
The prioritized standards that will
be learned and demonstrated
during this lesson.

DP Content Competencies:
The DP Content Competencies that
will be learned and demonstrated
during this lesson.

DP Personal Competencies:
The DP Personal Competencies that
will be learned and demonstrated
during this lesson.

Assessments:

The methods used to inform the students and the
teacher about how well the class met the lesson
objective.

Modifications:
The accommodations to support the learning needs of
different students, including student groupings,
differentiated materials, integrating different learning
styles, technology, IEP Goals, etc.

Mini-lesson

Motivate

Provides the purpose for this lesson, by creating an opportunity for students to connect
personal and/or prior experiences to the topic.

Elaborate

Thoroughly explains the strategy, skills, or content to be learned and/or task to be performed
by the students, including an introduction to new vocabulary, examples to support the
content, and scaffolding of prior knowledge important for the lesson.

Demonstrate

Carefully and explicitly models – using instructional models such as “think aloud”- the strategy
or skills that students will use and/or the task that the students will complete, provides time to
check for class understanding, and introduces the work that students will do during guided
practice.

Practice

Work Time:

The opportunity for students, working individually, in pairs, or in groups, to use the
information taught by the teacher to complete a specific task similar to that which the teacher
modeled. The teacher actively observes and listens to the students’ process and gives them
feedback and support.

Wrap-Up

Sharing:

The opportunity for students to present the work they have accomplished during guided
practice and for the teacher to assess how well they have met the objective for the day. The
class also shares the positive work habits observed, the habits to work on in the future, and
any questions or ideas that were raised during the lesson.

Reflection:
The time for students to reflect on their learning by providing a prompt that encourages
students to review what they learned or how they learned it, identify remaining questions,
describe how they can build upon or use what they learned, etc.

Extended
Learning:

A related assignment to practice what was learned during the lesson, or prepare students for
the objectives in the next one.
