  • IntroductionSeveral years ago, I discovered Dr. Kristen Neff’s research on self-compassion as I was preparing for another course. She researches and studies the role of self-compassion on our health and well being.  Dr. Neff is an associate professor at the University of Texas department of educational psychology. Her area of expertise is self-compassion; or self-focused lovingkindness, as I like to call it.Though Dr. Neff does not necessarily approach self-compassion from a communication perspective, self-compassion is about intrapersonal communication: how we communicate to ourselves. Our thoughts are a form of intrapersonal (meaning within the person) communication. I hope this talk makes you more aware of how you talk to yourself about yourself. (The food for thought quotes by Alice Walker earlier in this module is also about intrapersonal communication.)I appreciate her work, her ideas, and her ability to share her insights in laypersons’ terms.  Last year, it occurred to me  to share this video of Dr. Neff’s TED Talk with  my students; especially those who work daily at managing anxiety, as I do. After studying Dr. Neff’s work, there is a new gentleness I now have with myself that is refreshing and healing. I hope you derive some benefit from this as well.Student Learning OutcomesBy the time you finish viewing and studying Dr. Neff’s video, you should be able to write about Dr. Neff’s work.define self-compassionexplain what  the scientific research teach us about practicing self-compassionexplain what are the effects of self-compassionexplain how self-compassion differs from self-esteemexplain the three components of self- compassion STUDY TIP: You should take notes as you view this video. You should certainly watch this more than once. Here is the link to her TED Talk Link (Links to an external site.)   Dr. Neff’s Talk on Self-compassionLinks to an external site. After studying this video, proceed to Discussion #5 (which is due Sunday, June 19.)

  • In this discussion, address: how does Dr. Neff’s view of self-compassion compare to or contrast with what you have learned/been taught about the three components self-compassion from one of the micro-cultures to which you belong. The micro- culture that I belong to is my gender micro culture because being a girl can lead to a lower self esteem which leads to having no self compassion. For girls it is always hard to have self kindness because you could be really hard on your self for something not going your way. Not having self kindness you put yourself down in ways that you would never put another person down. You will always find other girls prettier than you and you’ve been taught to compare yourself. Wondering to yourself why doesn’t your body look like hers or why don’t boys like me because I don’t look like her. Common Humanity  is the opposite and teaches that we should accept that we are imperfect and it is ok to not look like every other girl. We are all human and are imperfect. Mindfulness is putting ourselves through the pain of comparing ourselves. What we are used to is being hard on ourselves is comparing and always wondering why we can’t look like other girls. We are self critics and make us think that we are wrong. What would be the impact on you (the student) if you practiced self-compassion every day?The impact if I practiced self passion everyday will completely change my life. I believe that I would be more confident in myself. I would not compare myself as other girls that I see online. I would learn to love my body and not be scared that this is who I am. I think I would accept myself and not be so harsh on myself.
