Overview
The middle weeks of this course have discussed the shift towards intangible capital in the economy
the related rise of (and reaction to) digital platform business models. This second assignment
focuses on this subject by asking you to consider the social and political context of major digital
platforms and consider the likelihood that these models will be forced to change in the near future
due to pressures emerging from that context.
In a 2,000 word individual essay, you will build an argument that responds to the following
question:
Is the business model of major digital platforms politically sustainable?
The question will require you to draw from the content of weeks 5-8. Please review lectures 6-8 in
particular for a detailed discussion of the essay topic and the material that the essay should cover.
Case study
Unlike assignment 1, this essay requires you to conduct a case study analysis of a selected
industry. Further to discussing platforms and their political context generally, you should use this
one case study industry to emphasise and illustrate the points that you’ve made in response to the
question.
Your case study industry must be one of the following:
Online intermediary services (this refers to the sector dominated by Google, Apple IoS app
store, and other platforms that host and enable e-commerce. It does not refer to e-commerce

Structure
Please review the advice that we’ve given you on essay writing in tutorials, and also available here
(https://rmit.instructure.com/courses/125609/pages/course-resources) . Note that the structural
format for A1 and A2 is identical (other than the question/topic and the case study requirement in
A2) so that you can build feedback from your A1 into your A2 preparation.
For this essay, we advise that you use the following structure:
1. Introduction (~150 words): introduce the topic, state your argument, and provide a map of how
you will structure your essay
2. Theory/Context (~700 words): what are digital platforms and why do some in the literature
suggest that they operate on an unsustainable political footing?
3. Case Study Analysis (~1,000 words): what evidence can we see that the digital platforms in
your chosen industry are being threatened by political pressures?
4. Conclusion (~150 words): return to your argument, restate it in light of the evidence that you
have provided.
Further Guidance
Further guidance for this question:
It is essential that your essay shows an awareness of what “digital platforms” are, and does not
mistake these for e-commerce more generally. See the week 6 lecture and reading materials for
a precise definition of a 3-sided platform business model.
Note the precise usage of the word “sustainable”. This is not the same thing as ecological
“sustainability” that relates to the use of resources in an environmentally sound way. Here, the
term “politically sustainable” refers to the ability of the platform business model to survive in the
face or political pressures against it. See lectures and reading materials in week 7 and week 8
for a precise understanding of these political pressures.
A strong essay on this topic will utilise a broad range of scholarly sources on relevant topics.
You can visit the readings lists of the relevant modules for a starting place for these, however it
is expected that you will do your own research to build this theoretical base for both the
theoretical and case-based elements of your essay. There is no set number for how many
scholarly sources you should cite, as succeeding in the relevant rubric item relates more to the
quality of your sources and how well us use them, rather than how many you cite. However, as
a guide you should note that a strong essay of this length will cite approximately 8-10 good
quality scholarly sources in addition to case based sources (which may be non-scholarly).
