CIS120A Computer Science Careers
Exploring the Profession
For this assignment you will explore some technical career sites and perform research
into different Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, and/or Information
Technology careers. You will write and turn in a report on what you found.
Go to the Computing Degrees and Careers web link:
http://computingcareers.acm.org/?page_id=8 . When you get to the site look for the Site
Contents and go to the Computing Disciplines & Majors. You will find five or six sub
categories under the Computing Disciplines & Majors section, study them. Once you
have studied the different disciplines in this section, write how you would describe the
differences between the different technology related professions:
Computer Science
Software Engineering
Computer Engineering
Information Technology
Information Systems and Management Information Systems
Your explanation, in your own words for each of these, should demonstrate you
understand the differences between each of these professions.
You can also go to sites such as the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor
Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition Web site to find information
on these and other CIS careers.
You have the option of trading any of the above listed disciplines with another(s) you
find in the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook
Handbook provided it (they) relate(s) to Computer Information Systems, Computer
Science, and/or Information Technology jobs.
You also have the option trading the above listed disciplines by narrowing your selection
to four or five distinct areas within a particular discipline such as under Systems
Administrators you might research: Database Administrator, Network Administrator,
Customer Computer Support Administrator, Computer Systems Administrator, and so
on.
You will also find a hyperlink to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor
Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition Web site on the CIS120A
Resources web page .
When on the web site, look for the search text box just under the title banner.

In the search for section type in keywords for the different jobs you might be interested
in. For example below you can see I typed in Computer Support
and my search resulted in several hits, the first being what you see directly below:
Computer Support Specialists and Systems Administrators
Computer support specialists and systems administrators constantly interact with customers and fellow
employees as they answer questions and give advice. …

You will need to spend some time on both sites and I encourage you explore both site in
depth. There is a wealth of information to be found on both that I believe will be
beneficial to you. Especially take notice of the career fields that most interest you and
spend the majority of your time researching them.
What To Turn In
You will write a college level paper (think MLA style compare and contrast essay here)
on how you would describe the differences between the different technology related
professions you researched and which one or two most interest you and why. Be
mindful that YOU write this paper and you don’t plagiarize from these or other sites. In
the past students have copy and pasted whole paragraphs of material from web sites. I
will be testing for plagiarism and will take necessary action for those who cross the line.
