Math is essential for addressing practical problems and making informed decisions. It can
also be used to evaluate and enhance sporting techniques, as well as to model and
forecast outcomes. The quadratic formula and a simple algebraic equation were used to
calculate the hang time of Michael Jordan’s famous slam dunk from the free throw line,
which came about at 0.92 seconds. A TED-Ed film with Peterson and Patterson (2015)
explains this. After that, they were used to the hang time prediction on planets with
various gravitational pulls. This was only one basic example; just think of how amazing it
would be to use it in other contexts, like the movement of a robotic arm during critical
care therapy in surgery.
